Since 2018, Transpolis has been committed to the ABISUP* project aiming at developing a new abdomen to improve injury prediction on THOR average male and small female (interaction with restraints) and extending the use of APTS sensors to adult ATD.
To improve injury criteria, a new instrumented abdomen with advanced biofidelity representation has been designed and assessed with the ABISUP partnership. Transpolis has developed a new version of its APTS which replace IR-TRACCs in the THOR 50M and the THOR 5F (currently under validation by NHTSA and Euro NCAP for certified use in frontal impact tests).
*ABISUP meaning ABdominal Injury and SUbmarining Prediction.
In 2008, a total of 700 children were killed on Europe roads and almost 80,000 were injured. This led the European Enhanced Vehicle-Safety Committee (EEVC – WG12) to work on developing new technologies to improve the safety performances of child restraint systems.
In fact, abdominal injuries suffered by children are generally the result of the so-called submarine effect and the pressure exerted by poorly adjusted seat belts.
A member of the EEVC working group, the Gustave Eiffel University (previously the French Institute of Science and Technology for Transport, Development and Networks – IFSTTAR) developed its first APTS sensors in 2011, and in 2014, Transpolis was entrusted with the manufacturing and marketing of these sensors.
At the same time, the EEVC had been working on draft regulations to reduce the risk of submarining.
In 2013, the new ECE R129 i‐Size regulation, more exacting than the ECE R44, made rearward facing systems mandatory.
Moreover, to be approved, child safety seats are crash-tested with in-depth measures. APTS sensors detect the direct belt abdominal loading on Q-dummies with a focus on abdominal, thoracic and pelvic regions. This makes for more accurate safety assessments for the seat occupants and for better product design.
Each sensor is made of a soft but robust cylindrical elastomer bladder, filled with a special liquid and sealed with a mechanical head. The sensor head includes a miniature pressure cell and signal conditioning electronics. For impact testing, the sensors are inserted vertically by pair in the abdomen. APTS sensors were developed for the Q-Dummies series, representing children aged 1 to 10.
C-NCAP requirements include assessing submarining using the APTS sensors manufactured by Transpolis.

Our broad range of services include the calibration of APTS sensors using powerful tools developed internally. Upon completion of the calibration, a certification report is issued.
Although factory calibrated when first sold, Abdominal Pressure Twin Sensors must be periodically re-calibrated for Sensitivity and Performance. This is done using two test benches: pressure calibration and static bio-fidelity control, verifying the quality and the robustness of the sensors.
Transpolis calibration is compliant with SAE J211 and SAE J2570 international standards.
Upon completion of APTS calibration, a detailed certificate is issued: results table, calibration data, the calibration curve and the biofidelity static response.
